Dover Motor Speedway is a one-mile concrete oval in Dover, Delaware, nicknamed "The Monster Mile" for its steep 24-degree banking and unforgiving concrete walls. The all-concrete surface produces fast speeds and demands precise car setup, often leading to dramatic attrition. Dover hosts NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series events each season, and has been a fixture on the NASCAR calendar since 1969.
Dover Downs International Speedway opened in 1969 as a combined horse and auto racing facility, led by Delaware Attorney General David P. Buckson. The horse racing side struggled, but the NASCAR races and owner John W. Rollins kept the track going. The one-mile oval was resurfaced with concrete in 1995, and the fast, high-banked track became known as the "Monster Mile." The horse and auto racing businesses split in 2002, with Dover Motorsports running the speedway, and Speedway Motorsports bought Dover Motorsports in 2021.
