One of the world's fastest permanent road racing circuits, located in Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine near Elkhart Lake. Opened September 10, 1955. Hosts the NTT IndyCar Series XPEL Grand Prix, IMSA SportsCar Championship, GT World Challenge America, MotoAmerica, and Trans-Am.
Road racing came to Elkhart Lake in 1950, when the Chicago Region SCCA and the village ran races on public county roads; that original course is now on the National Register of Historic Places. After a child was killed at a road race at Watkins Glen in 1952, racing on public roads ended. In 1955 Clif Tufte built Road America, a permanent 4-mile circuit through the rolling Wisconsin countryside. It has hosted nearly every major form of road racing since and today runs IndyCar, IMSA, Trans-Am and MotoAmerica.
