Martinsville Speedway is a 0.526-mile paperclip-shaped oval in Ridgeway, Virginia, one of NASCAR's original tracks, opened in 1947. Its tight, 12-degree banked turns and long straightaways produce close, physical racing. Martinsville hosts the NASCAR Cup, O'Reilly Auto Parts and Craftsman Truck Series, plus the Whelen Modified Tour.
Martinsville Speedway opened as a red clay oval in September 1947, built by Virginia businessman H. Clay Earles and two partners. The first race drew more than 6,000 paying fans and so much dust that Earles later said nobody leaving could be recognized. Martinsville hosted its first NASCAR Cup races in 1949, the series' first season, and the France family bought half of the track a year later. It was paved in 1955, and the lower lanes of its tight turns were later surfaced with concrete. The track is also known for its inexpensive "Martinsville hot dogs."
