South Boston Speedway, known as "SoBo," is a 4/10-mile asphalt oval short track located just outside South Boston, Virginia. Opened on August 10, 1957, the track has been a breeding ground for NASCAR talent, with alumni including Jeff Burton, Ward Burton, Elliott Sadler, Denny Hamlin, and the Bodine brothers. Owned by Mattco, Inc. (the Mattioli family trust that also owns Pocono Raceway), SoBo is NASCAR-sanctioned and hosts approximately 12 events annually for local racing divisions including Late Model Stock Cars, Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock, and Hornets. The track's crown jewel event is the Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200, held annually on Independence Day weekend as the first race in the Virginia Triple Crown. NASCAR's three national series have all raced at South Boston, with the Cup Series last competing there in 1971.
