Darlington Raceway is a 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval in Darlington, South Carolina, opened in 1950 as NASCAR's first superspeedway. Nicknamed "The Lady in Black" and "The Track Too Tough to Tame," it seats about 47,000. It hosts the Southern 500 and NASCAR Cup, O'Reilly Auto Parts and Craftsman Truck Series racing.
Harold Brasington saw the 1933 Indianapolis 500 and wanted to bring that kind of race to the South with stock cars. He built Darlington Raceway on farmland in his hometown, sealing the land deal with a handshake, and it opened in 1950 with the first Southern 500. The egg-shaped oval has turns of different shapes and banking at each end, and the track calls itself "The Track Too Tough to Tame." The International Speedway Corporation bought the track in 1982 and expanded it in the 1990s, and even as NASCAR moved into bigger markets, Darlington kept its place on the schedule. The Southern 500 remains one of NASCAR's most prestigious races.
