For more than 60 years, Charlotte Motor Speedway has set the standard for motorsports entertainment and evolved into "America's Home for Racing." Nestled in the heart of NASCAR country, the iconic 1.5-mile quad-oval superspeedway hosts two premier NASCAR events each year — the Coca-Cola 600 and the Bank of America 400 — as well as more than three dozen other events for automotive and motorsports enthusiasts of all ages. The facility opened on June 15, 1960, and features 24-degree banking in the turns. Charlotte Motor Speedway became the first modern superspeedway to host night racing in 1992 and set a Guinness World Record in 2011 with the world's largest HDTV at a sports venue. The complex encompasses nearly 2,000 acres and also includes zMAX Dragway, The Dirt Track at Charlotte, and the NASCAR ROVAL road course.
Promoter Bruton Smith and driver Curtis Turner teamed up to build Charlotte Motor Speedway, and crews finished it in less than 11 months. It opened in June 1960 with the first World 600. Money troubles forced both founders out within the track's first decade. Smith and his partner, promoter H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, took control again in 1976, and the speedway became the base of Smith's Speedway Motorsports. It added lights, condominiums and a year-round Speedway Club, and today the complex also includes a dirt track, a drag strip and a road course used for the "roval" race. The track was called Lowe's Motor Speedway from 1999 to 2009.
