0.363-mile asphalt oval short track in Newton, NC, nicknamed "The Birthplace of Stars." Hosts CARS Tour, SMART Modified Tour, and weekly NASCAR-style racing; formerly held NASCAR Cup and Busch Series races.
Hickory Speedway was founded in late 1951 by Charlie Combs, who, according to his wife, laid out the track simply by marking it on the ground. It opened as a half-mile dirt track in 1952 and ran NASCAR-sanctioned races from its first season. The track was paved in 1967 and went through several owners before Benny Yount bought it in 1986. Hickory hosted races in NASCAR's top series and later the Busch Series, until the national touring series left after 1998. It is now a home for weekly racing, the CARS Tour and the SMART Modified Tour.
