North Wilkesboro Speedway is a 5/8-mile oval in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, opened in 1947 as one of NASCAR's original tracks. It closed after 1996, then was restored and returned to NASCAR with the All-Star Race in 2023. It now hosts the NASCAR Cup Series, Craftsman Truck Series and the CARS Racing Tour.
Enoch Staley fell in love with racing at a stock car race in 1945 and, with partners, built North Wilkesboro Speedway in the Brushy Mountains of North Carolina. It opened in 1947 and soon joined the new NASCAR schedule, becoming closely tied to the sport's moonshine-running roots. After Staley's death in 1995, Bruton Smith and Bob Bahre each bought half of the track. It lost its NASCAR races and by 1997 sat empty, and it stayed that way for more than two decades. Speedway Motorsports, led by Marcus Smith, brought it back with help from local supporters and drivers, and the Cup Series returned in 2023 with the NASCAR All-Star Race.
